Activate! on WRIR 4-14-22 (filling in for Mike Rutz)

Mike Rutz’s show Activate! on WRIR is known around the station as one of the most challenging shows to do, especially since you’re sitting in for Mike who does it every week.  He’s used to it.  It’s an audio music calendar featuring music from bands and artists who will be playing in the Richmond area over the next week.  So you have to do a lot of research for it in a short amount of time and also find music to play which should represent the artists appropriately.  Do you play the new single?  Or do you play an old favorite?  What do you play by local artists who listeners may or may not know?  It’s fun, but you want to do it justice.

I sat in for Mike on Thursday and even though it’s a relief to find plenty of music to play and plenty of live dates to promote, there is always so much more that you could play and highlight.  And that speaks highly of Richmond’s live music scene which is pretty cool.

Named after musical prodigy, VCU professor, and performer Dika Newlin (1923-2006), the prize launched in 2022 to award its first ever award for albums released in the previous calendar year. The winner will receive a $1,000 cash prize in the hope of fostering future recordings and performances.”

PRESS RELEASE:
“Synanthrope”
“Synanthrope” is the latest THUNDERCHIEF album to be released straight to Digital on Friday, December 3, 2021 (The Last 2021 Bandcamp Friday!).
Physical media release is planned for early 2022.

The band took a different direction in writing “Synanthrope”, almost as a direct response to artists who feel they have to belong in a particular “box” when writing/releasing music. By no means does this mean it’s better, it’s just a more relaxed approach to staying in the now.

StudioB is starting to roll back into form after many months of spotty releases.  The last year was hard on everyone, and the creative community was gut punched as venues closed and artists did whatever they could to remain productive and inspired.  This episode features new music from these Richmond-area artists,  all released in 2021, much of it worked on during lockdown in 2020.
