I’m sort of old-school when it comes to equipment and software. I don’t like subscriptions. I rarely sell old gear. And I don’t really take advantage of “free trials”. That said, I learned Audacity, the free DAW for audio editing and mixing, because a number of my podcasting clients were using and I found it to be surprisingly able. (I’m a Pro Tools guy which brings its own special brand of heartache. But at least their support sucks! I digress.) There ARE some things about Audacity that I’m not keen on such as how when you want to record in multitrack mode you select the number of tracks you want then just hit record. I know. That sounds user-friendly and logical, but I like to set up my session and inspect it before rolling. Like I said, I’m old school. But there’s a new version of Audacity out and the reviews have been positive – good news for podcasters and project studio producers who are not as old-school and are just fine using a free program. Here’s Music Radar’s take on it. Give me a shout if you don’t want to deal with any of this when producing your podcast. Some folks understandably feel they have enough on their plate with the ideation, hosting, interviewing and promoting of their podcast.

You can record audio files for each participant on a Zoom call. It’s great for when you want to import each participant’s file into a DAW session and process tracks individually.
Send your vocal track to your music track inside a compressor to allow the vocals and the music to sit in the mix together. It’s like the “pumping” effect used in music when you have a kick drum bringing down the overall music level in order to stand out.
Today’s production tip is for renaming regions in Pro Tools using keyboard shortcuts and what to do if at first the shortcut doesn’t respond. There’s always a reason for little things like this. I recently set up a new computer and all my settings were wiped out, and I’m still finding little gremlins in my workflow. Been there? Thought so.
This horrifying dystopian scene is Werner Herzog’s retelling of his experience at Trader Joe’s market which was actually written by Paul F. Tomkins in a satirical review intended to reflect Herzog’s less-than-cheery persona. Click here for an article on Tomkins and the review and Herzog’s reaction upon finding out about it. It’s not for the faint of heart or those with a fear of crowds, confined spaces or humanity in general. Werner wrote the review. I did the voice, sound design and ambient music. The performance is not an impression of Herzog, but was inspired by the fake review.
