Video Game Promo for “Hidden Deep” – Jay Smack VO

This is a recent promo trailer I voiced for the video game “Hidden Deep”.  Video games and the media associated with them are a massive industry and a huge part of the voiceover and post-production world.  It’s always a blast to work on a new project with game developers.  Their imagination and vision is incredible.  When you first receive a script for a part, whether it’s a trailer like this, or a part for a character, you don’t always have the benefit of a treatment, a video or even an illustration.  It’s up to you to interpret their vision and bring it to life while enabling it to match what will eventually be a (virtually) living, breathing character with a backstory.  It never gets old and it’s always a challenge.

Another interesting aspect, as an aside, is the audio, music and sound design.   As a post production mixer and musician, I hear elements of Ableton Live in the production.  If you work on Ableton you’ll hear some of the sounds and instruments.

Voice Actor, Buddhist Peter Coyote

As a voice actor myself who meditates (almost) daily and holds mindfulness in high regard, it was great to see this article in TRICYCLE – The Buddhist Review with one of my voiceover heroes who also just happens to be a practicing Buddhist and Zen priest Peter Coyote.  The stars don’t necessarily align, but they do make themselves available to awareness if you remain vigilant and , dare I say it, “mindful”.

From The Booth – Shakespeare – Hidden Agendas

Today’s wisdom comes from The Bard of Avon himself, William Shakespeare who has all kinds of wisdom cleverly implanted in his many works of comedy, tragedy, history and poetry. The quote is “The devil can cite scripture of his purpose”.

It’s the classic wolf in sheep’s clothing scenario. Beware of hidden agendas and be aware of those who see the world through convenient filters in that they tend to justify behavior under the guise of belief systems.

We should be equally aware of these filters in ourselves. Sometimes, what we take on faith or mistake for fact can be a lack of intellectual honesty and authenticity.

The full quote from The Merchant of Venice as uttered by the character Antonio:

“The devil can cite Scripture for his purpose.
An evil soul producing holy witness
Is like a villain with a smiling cheek,
A goodly apple rotten at the heart.
O, what a goodly outside falsehood hath!”

― William Shakespeare, The Merchant of Venice

XBox Game Trailer – Jay Smack VO

I love doing gaming vo – characters, trailers, Kickstarter campaigns, ALL of it. As a voice actor you get to stretch out and inhabit a fantastic domain. You’re very aware of the community, the creativity, the producers, designers, writers, composers, coders – it’s an amazing world and one of the most important and fastest-growing genres of voiceover.

Musical and visual tribute to science fiction writer and philosopher Stanislaw Lem – Jay Smack VO

Sometimes you get to play a small part in a big deal.

Highest gratitude and respect to composer Norbert Palej, whose breathtaking composition “Return From The Stars” provides the emotional foundation for this production and informed the narration.
+
About the piece: This beautiful tribute to science fiction writer and philosopher Stanislaw Lem is presented by the Polish Science Fiction Foundation in collaboration with Ars Activa. It features footage from the European Space Agency and an introduction from the International Space Station by astronaut Thomas Pesquet.

Shout out my voice acting coach Nancy Wolfson. We’ve worked on vo for this exact type of production in which the goal is to serve the images and the music and remain (almost literally) invisible. I still find voice acting, every aspect, fascinating, and I try hard not to get in the way, but rather do justice to the vision of the writers and producers.

Sci-Fi Mystery – Jay Smack VO

This project is a mystery in more ways than one. Not only is it a sci-fi mystery itself, but my voice is a mystery and I love it! You can’t tell it’s me, but that’s because my character requires that his voice be distorted due to the fact that he’s an “insider” and can’t risk being caught giving up any inside information. This is a series called “Wanderers” reminiscent of the classic radio dramas of the 30’s and 40’s in which your imagination plays a huge part in your experience. Enjoy!

Video: Go Forward Team Ride

The 2021 Go Forward Team Ride to benefit the Forward Foundation is in the books.  We had great weather with lots of families on-site during the ride.  The 50-mile ride itself went smoothly.  No incidents, crashes or punctures – all-in-all a picture perfect day for cycling.  Huge thanks and gratitude to everyone that came out to support the Forward Foundation.  There was a 20-miler, a 10-miler and kids’ ride and lots of fun, food and activities at Dorey Park this weekend.  Please consider making a donation in support of this great organization led my Executive Director and CEO Andrea Starr.  They work tirelessly to provide support and resources to single parents in financial crisis.   See you next year!
